Church School

Sunday School children gather at 9:55 am in St. John's Children's Chapel for a brief service of prayer. They then proceed upstairs to the classrooms for the Sunday School lessons of the day.

These lessons are built around the same Lectionary readings their parents and grandparents are hearing in worship. At the time of the Passing of the Peace (about 10:45), the children enter the sanctuary together, with their weekly offering of non-perishable food for the local Food Pantry, in order to worship and receive communion with their parents and grandparents. In this way they are included in the Liturgy of the Church, and also have dedicated Sunday School time to learn about scripture and faith.

St. John's Sunday School program is for pre-school children through the eighth grade.

Our Sunday School program is structured upon a cooperative model: parents and grandparents volunteer their time to teach on a rotating basis. St. John’s follows Safe Church Practices for any activities that involve children, in accordance with Diocese of Connecticut policy. Two non-related adults are present at all activities with children, and Safe Church Training is required of staff and encouraged for all children’s volunteers. Adults who teach classes are readily accessible to each other during the class times to assist one another with the needs of our children. We welcome parishioners of all ages to volunteer in the Sunday School.

Throughout the program year, Christian Education offerings for adults help all of us to continue in the Apostles’ teaching and guide us in applying our faith to contemporary living. Bible studies, prayer groups, book discussion groups, study sessions on particular Church issues, and guest speakers enrich our adult Christian journeys.

We welcome new students and their families into our education program. If you have any questions, you may leave messages for the Director of Christian Education at the church office telephone number, (860) 872-0517.
